And I'm not even talking about the Crushers and Goyfs he'll drop as well. Aggro Loam runs Seismic Assault, Devastating Dreams and Burning Wish to deal with Jailer, so in this matchup it doesn't really do anything but slow the Loam player down at best. If there's a lot of Landstill, I reckon Jailer might be an option but Landstill decks still play a lot of removal and will remove the Jailer before trying to win.Īgainst Loam decks it's the same story. Around here, nobody runs Decree or Eternal Dragon save for some Landstill decks. It slows the Ichorid player down, but it doesn't do anything.Īgainst other decks it isn't that great either. So postboard I really don't care about Jailer. And then there's Cabal Therapy and Unmask too. Ichorid might also sideboard in Firestorms if they suspect Jailer, at least, I always do. You're playing Black so Ichorid would always sideboard in Chain of Vapor to stop Leyline, which also stops Jailer. Postboard Jailer versus Ichorid is waste of time. If you, however, manage to get it online before Ichorid has business on the table, you're in good shape. The fact that it removes Bridges isn't really a big deal because A) a Dredge player would never overextend into a Jailer and B) because it's impossible to Dredge Bridges when you can't Dredge :) Other than that, you're giving Ichorid one-two turns to do stuff before Jailer comes into play, which is usually enough for Ichorid to get a head start and play an Unmask or Cabal Therapy or two. Pre-board, Jailer can catch Ichorid bij surprise, but even some versions of Ichorid run maindeck Darkblast. I'd rate Extirpate as a bigger threat to Dredge than the Jailer, and as we all know, Extirpate does little against Dredge. I've played Dredge for a long time and in my experience Jailer is the least threatening of the hate cards. Given these circumstances, would sideboarding Yixlid Jailer over some of the other versions of graveyard hate be feasible? What would be the circumstances that would lead you to choose Yixlid Jailer? Which archetypes would benefit more from it? Or is Jailer just a bad card for Legacy? The combination of powerful effect + beater however appears to be trumped by removal, meaning other non-creature cards with similar effects are preferred. Both have seemingly powerful effects attached to a possible beater. The way I see it, Jailer suffers the same condition as Dark Confidant. As such, it suffers from splash damage by the sheer virtue of it being the most commonly hated/prepared for card type in Legacy. The fact that it is also a creature means that a plethora of removal is already present in most decks. A lot of decks can easily answer the card because of it. One major drawback of the card is the toughness of 1. However, playtesting with the card revealed several problems with it. Yixlid Jailer, two years ago, appeared to have broad applications to the Legacy format and thus seemed to be a strong choice. Jailer also hinders Loam strategies, Squee, Genesis and other such nonsense while also providing your deck with an additional beater. Theoretically, the combination of threat + disruption would give decks sideboarding Jailer an edge against Ichorid a hate card that incidentally also removes Bridges from Below when answered (killed). It's basically a bear that also hoses the entire Ichorid combo. When Yixlid Jailer was spoiled, I got really excited over it.
